'Tis the Season . . . for Kindness

Today we learned a little bit about kindness from my grandfather. My mom’s dad spoke to a large group and explained how important kindness is. Especially in this season, we should show kindness to others. To illustrate he shared a story about his grandson (my cousin): David is a missionary who is training to go out and preach in another language. He and the other missionaries-in-training wear white shirts and ties everyday. One day David noticed one young man who had sat down to eat at a table nearby. The young man stood apart from the rest of the young men because he was wearing a wrinkled shirt and messy tie that were looking worn out. The next day the young man sat down in the same wrinkled shirt and soup spotted tie, and a third day as well. David realized that the young man only had one white shirt and tie. David suggested to his friends that they each give this young man one shirt and tie from their own abundant wardrobes. That night, they set three shirts and ties outside his room with a tag that said his name. Then next day the young man was beaming –proudly wearing one of the shirts and ties that they had given to him.

How simple of a gift to make such a change for someone else. This gift cost them no money, required little time, there was no elaborate wrapping, in fact the young man never knew who gave him the shirts and ties. I hope each of us can look around and see someone who could use some kindness.
